Wheat Bread

  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 cups lukewarm liquid (milk or water, I use powdered skim milk, mixed)
  • 2 packages dry yeast dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups wheat flour
  • 5 1/2 cups white flour

Mix the first five ingredients in a large bowl; add shortening. Gradually add all of the wheat and white flour, kneading the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Place in greased bowl turning once and cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until double about 2 hours. Punch down and turn over, covering once again with damp cloth. Allow to rise until double, about 45 minutes.

Punch down and form into two loaves. Place in two greased bread pans. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise until double about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake 35 to 45 minutes.
